Subject: URGENT:Gilmore gives $28,000 grant to VA Armenian Martyrs Day
Committee to make videos for VA Schools. We need a massive protest.
Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 18:20:08 -0500
Call the numbers below and protest.
Why are they using your tax money for such a controversial and contentious
issue? Is this relevant to VA?
If videos are made will they represent both sides of the conflict
objectively?
If not, again why is your money being spent for propaganda and favoritism?
There were two hundred applicants for the grants, only seven received the
money, one of them being for the so called armenian genocide videos. 193
applicants were rejected. At whose expense that $28,000 is being wasted on
this irrelevant and warped project? Try to find out who the rejected grant
applicants are.
Contact Rep. Jim Moran with this info and express your indignation.
In May 2001, VA Board of Education dropped the so called Armenian genocide
from their Standards of Learning. Why such activity against the VA Board of
Education Standards?
WE NEED ACTION NOW! Telephone calls, faxes, letters. Anybody with more ideas
to fight this let us know.
PS. Gilmore's candidates (Earley-Katzen) lost the election, most virulent of
them Jay Katzen, with a very small margin. We think our votes may have made
a difference. Now our voices should make a difference. Remember this man
refused to give us a proclamation for the Turkish Republic Day.

GOVERNOR GILMORE AWARDS OVER $292,000 IN STATEWIDE EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP
PROJECT GRANTS TO SUPPORT
EDUCATION REFORM EFFORTS
RICHMOND - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced $292,096 in grants from the
Governor's Virginia Business-Education Partnership (VBEP) program. Seven
projects were awarded to non-profit organizations and state agencies,
including institutions of higher education, utilizing new or innovative
education partnership activities that include the private sector and support
state and local education reforms. Partnership project winners will receive
grants ranging from $27,000 to $50,000 through the School-to-Work
Opportunities Act of 1994.
"Virginia continues to lead the nation in education reform,"
Governor Gilmore said. "Education partnerships between parents, educators,
communities, and businesses can help to achieve the goal of high quality
education for every student and prepare them for successful lives and
careers in the 21st century."
"Partnerships strengthen public schools and make a difference in the
lives of children across Virginia," Secretary of Education Wilbert Bryant
said. "Virginia's school systems are investing in children in the best way
possible by encouraging parents, businesses and community leaders to take
stronger interests in our schools."
The seven winners were selected from applications submitted by state
agencies, nonprofit organizations and colleges from across the Commonwealth.
Submissions were judged on a competitive basis by a panel that included
representatives of the education and business communities. The following
grants were awarded:
Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) -- $27,000
The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) will
develop an educational program for teachers, students and their communities
based on knowledge gained through APVA's Jamestown Rediscovery
archaeological and research initiative. The program will integrate related
subjects and technologies including geography, environmental and life
sciences, history and archaeology and initially will be developed for
elementary students.
Armenian Martyrs Day Committee of Virginia -- $28,310
The Educational and Curriculum Subcommittee of the Armenian Martyrs Day
Committee of Virginia will produce an age appropriate and teacher friendly
curriculum material supporting the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Specifically, the instructional videos and resource guides will be provided
to 1500 middle and high schools across the Commonwealth and will address the
Armenian Genocide of 1915.
Swift Creek Mill Theatre -- $38,546
The Swift Creek Mill Theatre, Inc. will promote student achievement and the
Virginia Standards of Learning by providing tickets for students to attend
children's theatre arts productions through the "Theatre Reach Program."
Productions reinforce Standards of Learning and classroom resource materials
will be developed by educators to reinforce student mastery of concepts.
Science Museum of Virginia -- $48,800
The Science Museum of Virginia will provide technology training for teachers
and students through the "Becoming an Argonaut with Jason" program.
Technology-integrated science curriculum units across the disciplines will
be used to promote academic achievement and science and technology
exploration. This project will serve a minimum of 3,000 students in
grades 6 through 12 in the Greater Richmond area.
Virginia Association of Museums -- $49,440
The Virginia Association of Museums will provide unique summer learning
opportunities for families and teachers across the Commonwealth through the
"TimeTravelers" program. More than 350,000 passports are distributed
annually to students across Virginia to promote educational achievement and
parental involvement by visiting historical and cultural sites.
State Council of Higher Education for Virginia -- $50,000
The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) has partnered
with the federal GEAR-UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs) program to mentor approximately 4,800 7th through
12th grade students across Virginia, tracking their progress in junior high,
high school and through successful enrollment in post-secondary schools.
VBEP will assist SCHEV by providing funds to establish and maintain the
Gear-Up Neighborhood Academies.
VCU/FIRST LEGO® League -- $50,000
FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) is a partnership between Virginia Commonwealth
University and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and
Technology) that will sponsor 35 teams of 9-14 year-olds from Virginia's
rural and inner-city communities to construct and program a robot. Working
under the direction of teachers, parents and professional mentors, teams
will use programming software, sensors, motors and gears. Students work in
an environment that encourages inquiry and hands-on experimentation,
learning other skills such as teamwork, perseverance and time management
through this high-tech experience.
The Virginia Business-Education Partnership (VBEP) program was created in
1993 to promote, support, and recognize partnerships in education throughout
the Commonwealth. The most recent grant awards are part of VBEP's $33.6
million Virginia School-to-Work Initiative that is helping to build and
support partnerships for increased student academic achievement and parental
involvement, as well as provide students with opportunities to explore
career options and obtain further education or training after high school.
In addition to overseeing education partnership grants, VBEP serves as an
information clearinghouse on partnership building and recognizes exemplary
partnerships each year through the Governor's Partnerships in Education Awards.
